Working Out & Getting in Shape

Last November a small workout place opened two doors down from Chris' office. Chris thought it would be a nice perk to offer his employees, and me, the opportunity to workout and get in shape. You know, healthy employees, productive employees. Enter Kettle-bells. What the heck are Kettle-bells you ask? Well let me tell you about them. Kettle-bells are a centuries-old training tool that are cast iron balls with a handle. Check out my photos. The exercises are done in sets of three of varying repetitions. The Kettle-bells come in different weights from very small, 5 pounds to very large, some as heavy as 55 pounds. Each week is a different routine and also includes floor work, for example Russian Twists, sit-ups, push ups, tuck and rolls, and upper body, arm strengthening sets. It is a killer workout. I have seen myself go from using a 10 lb weight for most exercises to using a 30 lb for some lifting. I can even do manly push-ups now. Today I did 10! Yea me! I have never in my life been able to do a manly push-up, and barley girly ones at that. HOWEVER, I'm wondering about this getting in shape thing everyone claims is good for you. I always thought that if one eats right and exercises one will change the shape of their body and loose weight, because that's why we go through the pain of exercise so that we can come out the other side a slimmer, toner, healthier person. Am I right? WRONG! At least in my case it's wrong.

I started this working out thing the first week of November and I weighed !(* lbs. and wore a loose size !^ (You'll just have to guess the weight and size) and now that it's April I have gained 11 lbs and my size !^ is tight. What is up with that? Well, I understand the physics of working out and the fact that I am building muscle, but I thought for sure I'd loose some weight. I suppose the way I eat has something to do with that. ha ha ha. Actually I know it has a lot to do with what I eat. When I was in my 20's if I wanted to loose weight all I had to do was work out. It didn't matter what I ate, and let me tell you I ate a lot of junk in my 20's. But then the babies came, all six of them and since my last one was born almost 11 years ago I have really had a difficult time loosing weight. Okay, okay, okay. I have to devise a good solid plan that I can stick with that will help me loose weight and get healthy. According to all the health charts for my height, 5"7' I should weigh between 123 and 164. Bwaaaaaaaa, What are they kidding? I weigh more than 164. Infact for me to weigh 164 I need to loose
44 lbs.

Okay, here goes. I am thinking, if I put it out there for the entire universe to see then maybe I will have the strength and determination to work hard at loosing. Last month I told myself that I was finished with caffeinated soda and now I am sleeping much better at night. Last week I told myself that I was finished with all soda, that's a hard one to give up. This week I am telling you all that I am done, completely done, never to eat again done, with all, every stinkin bit of fast food. There I said it! I said it to myself, to you, and to the entire world of blogging.

So, with my working out with Kettel-bells, and eating better, replacing fast food with whole foods and replacing soda with water. Let's just see how it goes. Wish me luck.

  1. It takes a long time, and a lot of discipline with what you eat. Make sure you get the right amount of protein (more than you think you need), carbs(complex), and fat (good fat), and drink lots of water, more water than anything else, and get enough sleep. It will happen. When I was just working out, and not monitoring my food, my weight didn't change. When I started to log my food and keep the calorie count in check, I immediately started to drop pounds. It is tedious and time consuming, and for a little while you become obsessed with entering what you eat in your food log. But I promise the combination of those things pays off. And the scale does not lie. Not daily weigh ins, but over a month, hyou'll know if you are eating too much. Remember how long it took to get where you are, you are not going to get where you want to be overnight. It is completely awesome that you are doing this for yourself. You'll feel so good! Keep it up! Jane
